TOMMI – A game to feel better

    By Softcare Studios

TOMMI is a virtual reality experience designed by Softcare Studios to help pediatric patients better cope with the challenges of therapy and hospitalization. Provided as an immersive game set on a magic island, it’s aimed at reducing the anxiety and pain of young patients undergoing stressful medical treatments in oncology, dentistry and orthopedics.

Game activities range from relaxing “sensory toys,” where children compose melodies and modify colors, to dynamic action games and memory tests. Additionally, children can play with their parents in collaborative sessions, using virtual reality as a communication tool to trigger interaction and relationships while in the hospital.

TOMMI has been designed in collaboration with doctors, psychologists, children and their families, and it’s now used in pediatric hospitals in Italy and the U.S. to change how we can help patients go beyond the walls of the hospital, starting from their mental and social well-being.

In 2018, TOMMI was selected as the best e-health project in Europe by the European Commission, and lauded by Merck and Pfizer pharmaceutical companies as an innovative digital health tool for improving the quality of life of young patients in hospitals.

We presented the project for the first time during a 24h hackathon in Rome in 2016, and after three years TOMMI is helping to make children's smiles and well-being a priority during their daily challenges as patients.
