Inclusive Storytelling
Shadow Game

Shadow Game is a coming-of-age story, a journey through the shadow side of Europe with underage refugees as our guides.
Every day, young people traveling alone try to cross life-threatening borders in Europe, looking for protection and a better life. They travel through a shadow world we do not know: minefields, bears, fast-flowing rivers, smugglers and border guards. At the risk of their own lives, the teenagers make the crossing, which they themselves call the game. Meanwhile, they grow up at lightning speed.
Shadow Game is a project of Eefje Blankevoort & Els van Driel. It consists of a feature-length documentary, a web series, an adventure game, and a photo series in collaboration with Cigdem Yuksel, which starts out as an engaging journey and ends with the understanding that real teens are taking life-threatening risks and go through almost surreal hardships.
Sami is the 15-year-old main character of Shadow Game. Streetwise and resourceful, he has left his poor, war-torn home country to find safety and a better future. During the course of the game, he transforms from a naive boy into an adolescent, maturing fast in this harsh world. In Shadow Game, players get to experience his story.

The documentary will premiere at the 2020 IDFA.
With Shadow Game, we want to make sure that part of the proceedings of the game also flow back to helping these young immigrants. We view this as an essential element of making this game and telling their story.
Furthermore, we think this story will resonate with an audience that is close in age to the subjects of this game and documentary. In our approach for the development, we want to secure a budget for the vertical slice in order to apply for further funding. Also of note is that part of the development budget will be doubled by the Belgian Government.
