Mogao Caves

Mogao Caves is a six-degree of freedom virtual reality experience that takes the user to the Silk Road site in Northwestern China. The caves were built over a thousand-year period are covered with elaborately detailed Buddhist paintings. The paintings and sculpture tell the history of the Silk Road and the confluence of cultures that intermingled there.
The VR experience gives the user the opportunity to freely roam through the painted caves. Each cave contains strategically positioned hot spots that inform the user with voiceover and animation about the stories depicted on the walls and was written specifically for this piece by some of the leading historians in the field.
The caves were captured using highly detailed photogrammetry, resulting in gigapixels of detail for each mural in the caves. The user is equipped with a magnifying (accessible by rotating the controller) that allows them to explore the fine details that a resolution limited headset prevents a user from observing.
Mogao Caves was made possible by the Dunhuang Foundation in collaboration with the Dunhuang Academy.
