Flowborne – A Meditative Biofeedback Breathing Game in Virtual Reality

    By Vunderwelten VR

Flowborne is a virtual reality experience that conveys a healthy breathing style in an intuitive and playful way. The player’s breath is used as a game controller. The game takes you on a meditative journey through a fascinating virtual world based on psychological principles of restoration and recovery. Follow the traces of Yuna, who once roamed the temples of the world to discover the secret of the breath. Experience a memorable and deeply relaxing pilgrimage through soothing landscapes, and unravel the secret of the breath.

A core innovation of Flowborne is the integration of the player’s abdominal breathing into the game. An empirically validated algorithm utilizes the VR hand controller to pick up subtle, respiration-induced abdominal movements. The virtual environment reacts to your breathing, and every breath translates into virtual movement, letting you gently explore the virtual world with your breath

Flowborne is based on an applied research project by psychologists Johannes Blum and Christoph Rockstroh at the University of Freiburg (Germany). The efficacy of the game has been tested in an intervention study. Besides improving diaphragmatic breathing and reducing respiratory frequency, six sessions of Flowborne lead to a 27% increase in breath awareness, a 25% decrease in perceived stress, a 31% reduction in symptoms of burnout, and a 25% increase in self-efficacy.

A free demo version of Flowborne is currently available via SideQuest here.
